Breastfeeding Facts

  • Breastfeeding is best for your baby.

Breastfeeding is the best, and most natural, way to feed your baby!  Breast milk is the ideal food for your little one because it contains everything your baby needs to thrive and grow for the first months of life.  What is more, your breast milk is made specifically for your baby, continuously changing along with your baby's needs.  Breastfed babies have an increased IQ due to the brain-building components of breast milk along with the mother-baby interaction that fosters intellectual development.  Breast milk inhibits allergies, prevents infections and gastrointestinal diseases, lowers the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and is less likely to cause overweight infants.

  • Breastfeeding is good for you.

Your baby isn't the only one that will benefit from breastfeeding - you will, too!  Producing milk burns extra calories which can help you return to your pre-pregnancy shape faster.  Breastfeeding also helps speed the return of your uterus to its normal size, with less bleeding.  It reduces your risk of developing uterine cancer, pre-menopausal breast cancer and osteoporosis.  And, breastfeeding allows you some much needed quiet time, alone with your baby.

  • Breastfeeding is convenient.

Breastfeeding enables you to save a great deal of money and time.  You don't have to buy or prepare formula and bottles.  You even help the environment by eliminating the extra waste that comes with formula feeding (bottles, cans, and boxes) from your garbage. Breast milk is always available and at the right temperature, so you can immediately satisfy your baby when hunger strikes.  Breast milk is sterile and much easier for babies to digest, which results in less tummy trouble for baby.

  • Breastfeeding deepens the bond between mother and child.

Breastfeeding is a fulfilling experience because it brings you close to your baby, time and time again.  The warmth and touch of your body are naturally comforting to your child.  The familiar beat of your heart and sound of your voice along with finding a place to suck are calming for your baby.  Your baby is reassured and your love is shared in a very real way with every intimate feeding.  It is emotionally gratifying to know that this is one thing that you alone can provide for your baby.
