It's not always easy, but it is worth
it! |
Breastfeeding my daughter Julia has been one
of the most rewarding experiences of my life, but it didn't come
easy. We had a rough start. After my c-section, I
struggled to get her latched on. I had trouble finding a
position that was comfortable for both baby and me. On top of
that, the staff at the hospital expressed concern that Julia wasn't
getting enough milk to develop normally. After each feeding,
the nurse would ask how long she fed, then suggest that I allow them
to supplement with formula.
I really started to feel anxious about my ability to breastfeed.
I felt like I was failing my daughter. My husband knew I
needed help and booked time with a lactation consultant. She
helped me with positioning and latch on. She pointed out the
suck and swallow pattern that confirmed Julia was getting milk.
Still, I kept a journal for the first few weeks, documenting every
feeding and diaper change to feel confident my baby was getting
enough to sustain her.
Once it was evident that Julia was growing, I was able to relax and
let things flow naturally. I quit timing and documenting every
feeding, and relied on Julia to determine when and how long she
needed to feed. Finally, I was able to enjoy the intimate
experience of nursing my daughter. I will always cherish the
time I've spent with Julia at my breast, when it was only my baby
and me. Breastfeeding won't go on forever, but I hope the
standard of closeness breastfeeding has established will.
