Sleep next to the baby. |
If you are having trouble getting your baby to
nurse, lay down with the baby. Preferably with few clothes on.
The baby will like the skin to skin contact. A sleepy baby
that isn't too hungry will eat better than a mad, very hungry baby.

Let people know you're breastfeeding. |
Start by letting the staff where you're
delivering your baby know that you intend to breastfeed. You
may find that some hospitals are more supportive than others.
My husband and I had to reiterate my wishes to breastfeed to every
nurse that came on duty during my hospital stay. They were all
so eager to give my baby a bottle of formula!
Also talk with your family and friends about how important
breastfeeding is to you. You will deter a lot of negative
comments and gain support simply by showing the pride and confidence
you have in your decision to breastfeed.

Be proactive! |
Learn what you can before your baby comes, and
ask for help when you need it!
I took a breastfeeding class during my pregnancy. The class
provided me with practical information along with a lot of
inspiration, encouragement and support. My husband attended
the class with me, which made a huge difference. He was
involved and supportive from the start. I also called upon the
help of a lactation consultant when I started out having trouble
getting my baby to latch on. She sat down with my baby and me,
and walked us through step-by-step until we got it. It was
worth it!
