Mommy's Bookshelf

Welcome!  I am delighted that you're here!

Moms are busy people.  With so much to do, it may be a challenge to incorporate everyday reading into the routine, but it is a challenge worth facing.  Reading is a great way to relieve stress, refuel and, most of all, discover something new.
Here you will find a selection of recommended books that have been particularly helpful to me.  Take a look at what's on the shelf and let me know if there's a book you'd like to add!

Dr. Spock's Baby and Child Care:  8th Edition
Benjamin Spock, M.D.

This book is a must-have for any parent.  It is a great reference guide packed full of information and practical advice on parenting your child from preconception through adolescence.  Additionally, Dr. Spock instills a sense of confidence in parents by encouraging a policy of "Trust yourself" throughout the text.  Sections of the book include: Your Child, Age by Age; Feeding and Nutrition; Raising Mentally Healthy Children; Common Developmental and Behavioral Challenges; Learning and School; Health and Safety; Glossary of Medical Terms; Common Medications for Children; Glossary of Common Medication; and Resource Guide.  This is the most comprehensive child care manual you will find.

The Seven Secrets of Successful Parents
Randy Rolfe

I have yet to find a better parenting guide than "The Seven Secrets of Successful Parents."  Randy Rolfe offers realistic, inspirational support for building a positive, nurturing parenting style. This empowering book will build and renew your faith that you are making contributions to your child's life that will bring out their best - now and in the future.  Every chapter, a secret is revealed and demonstrated through case histories, personal experience and current research.   If I could recommend only one parenting book, this would be it.

Baby Signs:  How to Talk with Your Baby Before Your Baby Can Talk
Linda Acredolo, Susan Goodwyn, Douglas Abrams

This practical, easy-to-read book shows you how to communicate more effectively and earlier with your child using baby signs.  This is not a textbook for teaching American Sign Language, although many of the recommended gestures are from ASL.  The focus of this book is on developing a non-verbal language (whether it is ASL or one you create) in order to communicate with your baby before they can speak.  The 20 years of research behind this book suggests that children who use baby signs are more contented and become more proficient speakers.  The book is full of encouraging success stories and suggestions for getting started.

The Mister Rogers Parenting Book:  Helping to Understand Your Young Child
Fred Rogers

Overview:
This succinct book, targeted for parents of children age 3 to 6, consists of three sections that cover various parenting issues:  Everyday Experiences (e.g. Everyday Rules and Limits, Making Friends), First Experiences (e.g. Using the Toilet, Going to the Doctor) and Special Challenges (Moving, Divorce and Separation).  A parenting issue is discussed in each chapter, making it a quick and easy reference guide.  Parents will gain some insight into children's behavior and their own reactions to it.  Chapters begin with brief, real-life stories from parents and teachers and conclude with Helpful Hints that provide practical advice and solutions.

Comments:
There are a multitude of informative parenting books to choose from today.  What makes this one stand out among the rest?  The distinct voice of Fred Rogers; one that speaks simply, with compassion and tells us we are valued.  Parents will feel as though they are receiving guidance from a trusted friend rather than overly academic directives from a clinical expert.  This book promotes caring, understanding and respectful parenting that allows children to learn and grow with dignity.

The Secret Lives of Toddlers:  A Parent's Guide
to the Wonderful, Terrible, Fascinating Behavior
of Children Ages 1 to 3

Jana Murphy

Overview:
Toddlers do strange things that amuse, annoy and concern their parents.  This book uncovers why toddlers do the things they do and what parents can do to shape the behavior.  It is simply written and organized for busy parents who may not be able to read it from cover to cover.  Each chapter (there are 52) describes a common toddler behavior, the motivation behind it and practical ways to deal with it. It is a fun, easy read that is based on research and experience.  The Secret Lives of Toddlers is a great resource that parents will refer to again and again.
