What It Takes To Work From Home:  An Interview With Work-At-Home Mom Amanda Compton
by Leslie Grimmett

Have you ever dreamed of working at home?  Many moms think it's too good to be true or just plain impossible.  We got in touch with Amanda Compton, a website owner and a successful work-at-home mom, to ask her about what it takes to work from home.

  • How long have you been a work at home mom?

I started working from home in 2003 while in graduate school.  During this time I was already a full-time stay at home mom and I started a website in hopes to make some extra money.  I didn't realize it would turn into a full-time gig.

  • What is the greatest benefit from working at home?

The greatest benefit to working from home is, of course, being able to stay at home and raise my two boys.  I'm very fortunate to be able to have a home business.

  • What is the biggest challenge?

The biggest challenge to working from home is scheduling.  Scheduling time to do your work is hard with two kids in your care 24 hours a day.  Its even harder when your kids are not old enough to be in school or if you choose to home school.  You end up doing most of your work at night or early morning hours.  This also cuts into your family/home life.

  • What is the most important quality a work-at-home mom should have?

The most important quality a work at home mom should have is patience.  When you start working from home you will not become rich or even make money overnight.  It will take time and a lot of hard work on your part.  Have patience and just keep on doing what you are doing and your hard work will eventually pay off.

  • If you could give an aspiring work-at-home mom one piece of advice, what would it be?

The biggest piece of advice I would give an aspiring work-at-home mom is to be well informed.  Find out what really works and what doesn't.  Read all the information you can get your hands on and learn as much as you can.  Being informed makes a big difference because you could be working everyday doing the wrong thing.  You want to make sure you are doing the right thing with the precious time that you have.

Amanda Compton is a married work-at-home mom to two young boys, Gage & Greyson.  Her two main sites are http://www.ContestForMoms.com and http://www.HomeJobsForMoms.biz.  She also owns a few other websites, her most recent being http://www.amomsreview.com.  In her spare time, she enjoys photography, Grey's Anatomy, reading a book in one sitting and traveling.  And, of course, spending time with her husband and two boys.
